Shelter Cove Sundown

5"x 7"                  oil

This was the view walking back towards the boat ramp. The sun was just setting, silhouetting the cliffs and trees while casting its brilliant light across the ocean and shore. I loved the warm light against the rocks, the wet sheen on the sand, and the lit up pools of water.

Last Light on the Cliffs

7"x 5"               oil

I loved the puddles of seawater holding the mirrored cliffs like molten gold.

Reflections Connections

8"x10"                 oil

Late one afternoon my husband and I decided to take a walk on the beach at low tide. I found the glowing cliffs and their matching reflections breathtaking. Luckily I had my camera and took a bunch of snaps to later use as reference photos in my studio. This is number one of a few different views.

Fall Colors in Briceland

5"x 7"                     oil

We were at Beginnings in Briceland, CA this weekend to attend a (possibly) once-in-a-lifetime congregation to honor pioneers of the solar industry (my husband Charlie being one of them) who had been gathered from all around the US and beyond by the organizational zeal of Jeff Spies.
It was a great party. Not only did I enjoy meeting so many fascinating, brilliant, innovative people, but I spent a lot of time with my camera trying to capture potential paintings--like this one--showing the incredible colors of fall in this beautiful valley. It had rained briefly that morning, and showers continued intermittently throughout the day, creating a mist that softened the distant colors.

Fiery Skies

6"x 8"   oil

The sky looked so beautiful the next morning after the thunderstorms that I decided before we left the lake to take some last-minute photos. We didn't know yet that fires had started and the lovely orange glow was caused by them. We were truly lucky to have escaped when we did as the roads would soon be closed and too dangerous to drive on. Later seeing online photos of the fires raging all around the lake made me realize how precious my few pictures are as the woods will never look quite the same again.

Thunderheads Building

5"x 7"    oil

My husband and I just got back from a short but way too exciting camping trip with old friends. My husband and one of our group had both been fire-fighters and when they looked at the clouds piling up over the lake they predicted thunder--and lightning--coming soon. I managed to take some photos which I painted this (and other paintings) from before the serious thunder, lightning, and rain began. We sat out the brief thunderstorm in our various campers all the time worrying about the possibility of fire from the lightning in our drought-stricken area...and, sure enough, fires did start. We left the following morning just in the nick of time as we found out when we got home that the lake was surrounded by fires and the roads were being closed!

The Road Less Traveled

5"x 7"   oil

There are two roads that can take you to 'town' which is 25 miles away. One road is the commonly used road--it's faster--and this one is very literally the road less traveled. This particular bend in the road was where I set up my easel the first time I ever painted with oils outside. There were so few cars you could actually do that. This time, I just looked through my reference photos to take me back to that peaceful country road.

Barn, Cloudy Morning

5"x 7"   oil

I returned to the community garden/park where there are several of these wonderful old barns. I think this is one of my favorites as I've painted it now from many angles. This particular morning it was chilly and overcast and the sun never did come out while we were there. Still, I bundled up in every layer I'd brought and managed to get a painting started. I finished it in my studio from photos I'd taken.

Barn, Spring Morning

5"x 7"   oil

I just love these old weathered barns and the smells of the grass and flowers. A painter friend and I went here to paint 'en plein air'. It was such a beautiful clear, warm day.

Instant Gratification

6"x 6"   oil

For those of you that may have seen my blog post about my husband's recent hip surgery, it has been a constant battle to prevent dislocations--he's had 3 so far since January--which means many trips to the ER at the local hospitals. I haven't had much time to paint, but when I can I find that something bright and sunny like these wonderful, prolific flowers definitely cheers me up. I hope they have that effect on you too!

Spring Gone Wild

5"x 7"   oil

This is the enthusiastically blooming cherry tree next to the wall by the local post office. The wall is actually more of a sage green (the photo unfortunately came out much bluer looking) which looks great with the pink of the blossoms. If I can get a more accurate photo, I'll post it.

Red & White Camellias

When I commented on a friend's beautiful (and huge) camellia bush, she immediately cut me a bouquet to take home. I knew right away what I'd do with it--instant inspiration for a still life!

A Night To Remember

7"x 5"   oil

Yes, there are nights like this. My husband calls the shimmering reflective path on the water "the beckoning". It does seem to beckon one to fly up to the moon.

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers...

Bedside Bouquet

4"x 4"   oil

This is my first painting since my husband's hip surgery--hip-hip-hooray! He is getting around remarkably well, sometimes even walking without crutches. Modern surgery is amazing! This little painting is of the calendulas and hyacinths that I picked from our garden to put by his bed. I love their bright and cheery colors.

Reflections at Low Tide

6"x 6"   oil

My husband's hip surgery went well and he is healing rapidly. We got lots of help from neighbors and friends getting the house ready for him and also helping us deal with the storm damage that caused many trees to fall and block our driveway. Now, we can move forward and get used to the 'new normal'. Needless to say I have not been able to do any new paintings yet, but I was cheered to find out that this one, and some others, had recently sold. Yay!!

Hip Surgery

I may not be producing any new paintings for a while as my husband had to have emergency hip surgery. So, if you don't see anything new that's what's happening in my world.

Barn, Afternoon Sun

5"x7"   oil

This is another, closer view of one of the barns where my friend and I painted last Monday. Now that it is raining (and we really need the rain) I am so glad that we got to spend the afternoon painting that day. The weather was surprisingly warm with a deep blue sky and puffy cumulus clouds.

Settled In (Barn at Tooby Ranch)

5"x7"   oil

This painting was done in my studio from photos taken during the plein air session a few days ago. I love the comfortable, solid, settled-into-the-landscape feel of this old barn, and the warm reddish wood against the cooler tones of the trees.
